A Groundworker prepares works in the ground before, during and after the construction of a building. A Groundworker is usually the first tradesperson on a construction site. They are involved in the setting and out and preparation of the sub-surfaces in anticipation of the commencement of the structural work. They are involved in the installation of drainage systems, concreting, footpaths and driveways. 


Day to day activities may include: 

Clearing the construction site e Preparing the ground/foundations to allow for the construction to commence 

Excavation of trenches for foundations 

Setting up a site, including barriers, safety signs and cabins 

Interpreting drawings and specifications 

Providing excavation support to other construction professionals

Laying of pavements, kerbs and driveways 

Concreting 

Laying drainage and pipework systems 

Redirecting waterways and connecting pipes with existing pipework e Operating plant, such as excavators and dumper trucks  


Skills required  

 Interest and knowledge of building and construction  

Thorough with a high attention to detail 

Good problem solving skills 

Basic numeracy skills  

Good level of physical fitness  

Enthusiastic with a good work ethic 

Working effectively as part of a team 

Ability to follow instructions 


Career path and progression 

A Groundworker can progress to the role of Site Supervisor or Foreman with progression to Site Management. Opportunity to start own business or work self-employed. 

What can I expect to earn?

Salaries for this role are dependent on experience. Examples are as follows:


  • Newly trained Groundworker £17,000 - £20,000
  • Trained with experience Groundworker £20,000 to £25,000
  • Senior Groundworker £25,000 to £30,000+ 

What subjects should I study?

There are no formal qualifications to become a groundworker, but you are likely to need 4 GCSE's at grade 4 or above, including maths and English to study a Level 2 course.

How can I start my career?

Whilst there are no formal qualifications required to become a Groundworker. There are various routes to become a Groundworker these include: 


  • College - Level 1 Certificate in Groundworks or Construction Skills or Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Groundworks and General Construction
  • Apprenticeship - Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship  
  • Direct Employment with training
