Energy

The energy sector contains businesses whose purpose is the production and supply of energy. This includes companies who extract crude petroleum and natural gas, companies who generate, transmit and distribute electricity and companies who manufacture gas. It also includes companies who generate renewable energy from solar, on and offshore wind and tidal, and will include new technologies like hydrogen.

Did you know?

  • The largest offshore wind farm in the world - Hornsea 2 – is located 89km off the East Yorkshire coast in the North Sea. It generates enough electricity to power 1.4 million homes.
  • When construction of the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm is complete, it will become the world's largest offshore wind farm, generating enough electricity to power up to 6 million homes. Just one rotation of one of its wind turbines could power a UK household for two days!
  • The largest wind turbine manufacturing facility in the UK is the Siemens Gamesa factory located at Alexandra Dock in Hull. This state-of-the-art facility specialises in the production of offshore wind turbine blades and has been a significant contributor to the UK's renewable energy sector since its opening in 2016.
  • These projects are all part of the UK's broader strategy to expand its offshore wind capacity, contributing significantly to renewable energy generation and the reduction of carbon emissions.

Will there be opportunities available?

  • The energy sector is changing. The UK government has set targets to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, meaning the country aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions offset by carbon capture or other methods. The energy sector will play a key role in this transition, and many new jobs are expected to be created in the process.
  • The Humber region is often referred to as the UK’s Energy Estuary. The south bank of the river Humber is home to power stations, fuel refineries, and an offshore wind operations and maintenance hub. Saltend Chemicals Park, on the north bank, is home to the Triton Power station, and Drax, near Selby, is the UK’s largest single source of renewable electricity. All these facilities offer high-paying employment opportunities and create numerous apprenticeships.
  • Over the next five years, the wind industry in Yorkshire and the Humber is expected to require 10,117 additional workers.
  • The Humber region is the UK's most polluting industrial cluster, contributing approximately 37% of all UK industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Between now and 2050, plans to reduce these emissions are predicted to safeguard, and create, many thousands of jobs in the region.
  • Net zero and the drive for greater energy self-sufficiency in the UK are creating exciting job opportunities in large-scale energy storage solutions; electricity grid modernisation; the retrofitting of modern heating and insulation into existing buildings; the construction and maintenance of solar farms, and onshore and offshore wind farms; district heating networks; bioenergy; hydrogen production, distribution and storage; carbon utilisation; and carbon capture and storage.
