Companies in the construction sector are involved in the process of designing and creating buildings and infrastructure. This includes the building of houses, schools, hospitals, factories, offices, roads, bridges, motorways, and even railways. Projects vary in size from small single home renovations to huge multi-million-pound infrastructure developments, such as the construction of a new motorway or power station, employing thousands of different construction specialists.

- In terms of employment, construction is the seventh-largest sector in Hull and East Yorkshire. Since 2015, the number of people employed by companies in the sector has grown by 48%, an increase of approximately 5,890 jobs, making it the sector with the highest total and percentage employment growth in Hull and East Yorkshire.
- Employment in the construction sector in Hull and East Yorkshire is highest with companies involved in the construction of domestic buildings (3,500 total employment), electrical installation (2,750 total employment), plumbing, heating and air conditioning (2,500 total employment), joinery installation (1,400 total employment), and the construction of commercial buildings (1,400 total employment).
- Since 2015, employment in the construction sector in Hull and East Yorkshire has grown across most industries, with the exception of companies involved in the construction of roads and motorways and architectural activities, which have seen a fall in employment of around 750 jobs. Companies involved in electrical installation and plumbing, heating and air conditioning have seen the greatest employment growth, adding approximately 2,250 jobs.

Will there be opportunities available?
- The CITB predicts that, between 2025 and 2029, the UK construction industry needs to recruit the equivalent of 239,300 extra workers. In Yorkshire and the Humber, this means an extra 3,560 workers need to be recruited each year.
- In Yorkshire and the Humber, the demand for extra workers is slightly higher for occupations such as construction project managers, civil engineers and surveyors. However, there will be demand across the range of occupations involved in construction from carpenters and joiners, senior managers, other professional and technical and office support staff.
- Opportunities in the construction sector are likely to continue increasing in the future due, for example, to the government's target to build 1.4 million new homes across the country, along with the large energy, infrastructure and utilities projects being developed in our region.
