Companies in the construction sector are involved in the process of designing and creating buildings and infrastructure. This includes the building of houses, schools, hospitals, factories, offices, roads, bridges, motorways, and even railways. Projects vary in size from small single home renovations to huge multi-million-pound infrastructure developments, such as the construction of a new motorway or power station, employing thousands of different construction specialists.

- Since 2015, the number of jobs in the construction sector in Hull and East Yorkshire has grown by 28%, an increase of 3,455 jobs. It is the sector with the second-highest percentage growth in jobs, after the creative and digital sector, and the second-highest increase in the actual number of jobs, after the manufacturing and engineering sector.
- In Hull and East Yorkshire, the largest types of employers in the construction sector include those in the construction of domestic buildings (4,000 jobs); electrical installation (2,250 jobs); plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (1,950 jobs); construction of commercial buildings (1,300 jobs); construction of other civil engineering projects (1,000 jobs); and joinery (750 jobs).
- Since 2015, the types of construction sector employers that have grown the most in Hull and East Yorkshire, in terms of total job numbers, include those in the construction of domestic buildings (1,250 additional jobs); construction of commercial buildings (575 additional jobs); construction of other civil engineering projects (475 additional jobs); plumbing, heat, and air-conditioning installation (450 additional jobs); and construction of utility projects for electricity and telecommunications (405 additional jobs). Over the same period, the type of employer with the biggest reduction in total job numbers was in the construction of roads and highways (700 fewer jobs).

An additional 251,500 construction workers will be needed by 2028 to meet the expected levels of work in the UK.

The additional recruitment requirement in Yorkshire & the Humber of 2.6% per year is higher than the UK figure of 1.9%, meaning an extra 26,600 workers will be needed in the region from 2024 to 2028.

Between 2024 and 2028, the CITB forecast that the construction occupations with the highest additional recruitment requirement levels are: other professionals and technical staff working in construction (buyers, estimators, CAD technicians, environmental and conservation professionals, etc.); non-construction professional, technical, IT and other office-based staff (IT, marketing, legal, financial, and human resource professionals, etc); directors, executives and senior managers; and electrical installation trades.
