Recruitment Consultant

What do Recruitment Consultants do?

Recruitment consultants help employers find the right people for their jobs – and help jobseekers find the right roles. They act as a go-between, matching candidates’ skills and ambitions to companies’ needs. Day to day, you might be writing job adverts, searching CV databases, screening applicants, arranging interviews, and advising clients on hiring strategies. You’ll need strong people skills, as you’ll be building relationships with both candidates and employers, often in a fast-paced, target-driven environment. Some recruitment consultants specialise in certain industries, such as IT, healthcare, or engineering.

What can I expect to earn?

Starting salaries are typically between £18,000 and £24,000 a year. With experience, you can expect to earn £25,000 to £35,000, and senior consultants or managers may earn £40,000 or more. Many roles also offer commission or bonuses based on the number of successful placements you make – meaning high performers can earn significantly more.

What subjects should I study?

There are no fixed academic requirements, but strong GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and maths will be useful, as will A levels or vocational qualifications in business, psychology, or sociology. These subjects can help you understand workplace behaviour, communication, and business operations – all valuable in recruitment. Computer literacy is important too, as much of the work involves using databases, spreadsheets, and online job boards.

How can I start my career?

Many recruitment consultants start straight after school or college in trainee roles, where you’ll learn on the job. Others enter after gaining work experience in sales, customer service, or a specific industry. Apprenticeships in recruitment are available, combining practical work with training. Graduates from any degree background are also welcomed, especially if you can show strong communication skills and resilience. Networking, contacting agencies directly, and applying for trainee positions are all good ways to get started. You can also gain experience by working in HR or administrative roles to learn about hiring processes.

A career in recruitment can be rewarding if you enjoy meeting new people, solving problems, and working towards targets. You’ll be helping individuals take important steps in their careers while supporting businesses to grow – and no two days are the same.
