What do Steel Erectors do?

Steel erectors work in the construction industry, assembling the metal beams and girders that support the structure of buildings, sports stadiums, bridges, tunnels, and any other buildings which require a steel structure to support them.


Their work is usually done in the early stages of a construction project and involves working from plans created by engineers and architects.


Steel erectors usually work outdoors and often at height on raised boom lifts.


They work with crane drivers to guide steel frameworks into position and fix steel frameworks together with bolts or by welding.

What can I expect to earn?

Starting salaries range from around £19,000 to £25,000 per year. With experience, this can rise to around £35,000 per year. Experienced steel erectors can earn up to £45,000 per year.

What subjects should I study?

There are no set entry requirements to become a steel erector but, anyone considering it as a career would benefit from gaining GCSE qualifications in maths and English (or equivalent).

How can I start my career?

There are several routes you could take to help you start a career as a steel erector. You could complete a college course, which could help you find a trainee job with a construction business. Courses available include, Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills, Level 2 Award in Skills for Engineering, Level 2 Certificate in Construction Operations.


You could also get into this job by completing an apprenticeship like the structural steelwork erector intermediate apprenticeship or the engineering construction erector-rigger advanced apprenticeship.


If you already have some experience and qualifications in construction or engineering, it may be possible to become a steel erector by applying directly to companies.
