What do Wind Turbine Technicians do?
Wind turbine technicians install, maintain and repair wind farm turbines. They can work in remote rural areas or at sea. They work at height and outdoors in all weather. It can be a very exciting career.
Day-to-day duties could include installing wind turbine towers, fitting electrical, mechanical and hydraulic equipment, testing turbine blades and control systems, carrying out planned maintenance work, finding and fixing faults, and running safety checks on electrical substations and cables.
As wind turbines are a form of green energy you will also be doing your bit to positively impact the planet.
What can I expect to earn?
Salaries start around £20,000 - £25,000 per year and increase with experience. They can go up to around £47,000.
What subjects should I study?
You will need qualifications in English and maths in order to become a wind turbine technician. Courses in science, engineering or design and technology may also be useful.
How can I start my career?
There are various routes you could take to become a wind turbine technician. You could do a college course, such as mechanical, electrical or maintenance engineering, which could help you to get a job as a trainee with a wind turbine engineering company. You could do an advanced apprenticeship such as engineering technician, or maintenance and operations engineering technician. You could also do a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in a subject like renewable energy engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering, or electrical power engineering. Courses that include the opportunity to gain work experience through a year in industry or summer internship can give you an advantage when applying for jobs. Alternatively, if you have qualifications and experience in electrical or mechanical engineering from another industry, or from the armed forces, you could apply directly for jobs.
