Zoologist

What do Zoologists do?

A zoologist is a biological scientist who studies animals and their behaviour, physiology, ecology, and evolution. They may travel across the world and study animals in captivity, or in the wild. Their work is very varied and can include conservation, disease control, wildlife management, genetic research, mapping habitats, studying migration, or teaching. They often specialise in a particular area, such as marine biology, ornithology (study of birds), herpetology (study of reptiles and amphibians), or mammalogy (study of mammals).

Many zoologists work closely with other professionals, such as ecologists, environmental scientists, and policymakers, to address complex conservation challenges. They can also work for a range of organisations, from zoos and aquariums, to universities, museums, government departments, and animal or conservation charities.

The overarching goal of a zoologist’s work is to gain a comprehensive understanding of animal species, contribute to their protection, and actively participate in the conservation of their habitats.

What can I expect to earn?

The starting salary for a zoologist is in the region of £18,000 to £25,000 per annum, with experience this is likely to increase to around £30,000. An experienced senior zoologist can earn over £45,000 per annum.

What subjects should I study?

To become a zoologist, you will need to have studied biology. Other useful subjects include chemistry, physics, mathematics, and psychology.

How can I start my career?

For most zoologist jobs at least a degree in a relevant subject, such as zoology, biology, marine or environmental biology, is required. Some jobs may also look for you to have a relevant postgraduate qualification, for example a master’s degree or PhD.

Competition for jobs is high, so it is beneficial to gain relevant work or volunteering experience.
